Medicare Supplement Plans

Also known as Medigap, these policies help pay for out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover.

What Is Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance helps pay for some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn't cover, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Medigap policies are sold by private insurance companies and work alongside Original Medicare. They do not include prescription drug coverage — you'll need a separate Part D plan.

All Medigap policies must follow federal and state laws, which means they offer the same basic benefits no matter which insurance company sells them.

Medigap Plan Types (A through N)

There are 10 standardized Medigap plans (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N). Each plan must offer the same basic benefits, but they cover different amounts.

Plans A, B, D, G, M, N

These are the most commonly available Medigap plans. Plan G and Plan N are the most popular because they offer comprehensive coverage at competitive prices.

Plan G: Covers everything except the Part B deductible. Most popular choice.

Plan N: Covers everything except the Part B deductible and a small copay for office visits.

Plans C, F, K, L

Plans C and F are comprehensive but are no longer available to those who became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2006. Plans K and L offer partial coverage with lower premiums.

Note: Plan F is being phased out for new Medicare enrollees. Plan C is also being discontinued for new enrollees.

Important: If you were eligible for Medicare before 2006, you may still be able to enroll in Plan F.
